One of my assignments in college required us to find out how many people in the world have access to the internet, this was in 2018 and if my memory serves me correct, it was around 40 something percent. Today, the 30th of June 2022, I googled once again how many people have access to the internet and according to datareportal.com the figure is at 5 billion which represents 63 percent of the world population. That represents an almost 20 percent increase over the course of four years. This simply means that more people are getting online and exploring this glorious web space. But to what extent is our use of this innovation positive or beneficial?
When I started this blog in 2019, it was out of boredom and lack of things to do as I was jobless at the time. I never thought that I would become a part of a blogging community or participate in blogging festivals such as #WinterABC2022. The internet has given me an opportunity to be a part of this, creativity and innovation in the digital space is very vital to the development of the African continent. I have become connected to people I have never met, and have had an opportunity to work with people from different countries such as Cameroon. I am currently working as editorial intern for Lolwe magazine and just the other day I was thinking how it would not have been possible without the internet and other digital systems.
I think it is important for us to use these digital spaces for positive innovation. If we are to learn anything from stories of innovation, it should be that anything is possible, we just need to put in the work. The materials are there and we all have the most innovative resource ever given to man, our brains. It has been a privilege participating in #WinterABC2022 and I am proud to have come this far. I look forward to participating in many more of these festivals and reading the wonderful work that is being created by Afrobloggers across the world.
